Dr. Robert Zydenbos, a native of Toronto (Canada), received his academic training in Europe (the Netherlands
and Germany) and lived in India, mainly Karnataka, for seventeen years before being appointed full professor of Indology in
the University of Munich, Germany, where he teaches Indian philosophy and religion, Sanskrit, Kannada, and other Indian languages.
Previously he taught at the universities of Heidelberg, Madras, Toronto, and Cologne. His publications include The Concept of Divinity in Jainism, The Calf Became An Orphan: a study in contemporary Kannada fiction and Jainism Today and Its Future. At present, his main research interests are Kannada language and literature and the main religious traditions
that originated or developed in Karnataka: Jainism, Virasaivism, and Madhva Vaishnavism.
